Exciting Prospects for 2026 Stanley Cup Playoff Matchups

As the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs approach, anticipation builds around potential first-round matchups. Fresh contenders like the Buffalo Sabres could shake up the postseason landscape.

Exciting potential matchups for the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs are approaching, and the current standings suggest significant changes from last season. Teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators, New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, Los Angeles Kings, and St. Louis Blues find themselves outside the playoff picture. Conversely, the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Utah Mammoth, and Nashville Predators are positioned for postseason action.

With the regular season concluding on April 16, shifts in standings are likely, but the playoffs promise a host of new participants, particularly the Sabres. This leads to speculation about the most thrilling first-round matchups that could occur based on current standings.

Entertainment value is my primary focus in determining these matchups. Which seven-game series would captivate audiences the most? Without further delay, here are my five top potential first-round pairings:

While the debate over a switch to a No. 1-8 seeding can be set aside, the excitement generated by two of the top five teams facing off in the playoffs is undeniable. Last year's clash between the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars was electrifying, culminating in Mikko Rantanen's historic Game 7 hat trick that secured victory for Dallas.

This year's most likely equivalent matchup could see the Stars face the Minnesota Wild, though with Dallas just three points behind the Avalanche, a Colorado versus Minnesota showdown is also feasible. Either scenario promises to deliver high entertainment value and could be the standout matchup of the 2026 first round.

I'm particularly enthusiastic about the possibility of a Macklin Celebrini playoff run. Celebrini shone at the Olympics and was a highlight for Team Canada. A potential matchup against Nathan MacKinnon would certainly be must-watch television.

The Sharks have gained a following, largely due to Celebrini's talent. Both teams display an exhilarating pace and flair, making this matchup a potential ice ballet.

Should the Sabres drop to second place in the Atlantic Division while the Canadiens remain in third, or if the Canadiens fall to a wild-card spot aligned with Buffalo's standing, this matchup could materialize. The excitement from both fan bases would be palpable, as Sabres fans have eagerly awaited postseason action after a 14-year drought. Montreal is renowned as one of hockey's iconic cities, making this series thrilling for its atmosphere and the exceptional talent on display, including Cole Caufield, Lane Hutson, Tage Thompson, and Rasmus Dahlin.

Statistically, a potential Sabres-Canadiens matchup stands out as well. According to Stathletes, it would generate the second-highest projected goals per game among possible first-round pairings, surpassed only by a Canadiens versus Tampa Bay Lightning matchup.

The prospect of the Los Angeles Kings facing the Edmonton Oilers in the first round for an unprecedented fifth consecutive season is intriguing, especially considering the Oilers have won the previous four encounters. To complete the narrative arc, a 4-3 series win for the Oilers would be fitting.

It’s refreshing to consider a matchup featuring two teams that were absent from the playoffs last year, especially when they had significantly lower standings in the previous season. Last year, these teams combined for a minus-102 goal differential, which has improved to a minus-32 this season. It's uncommon for teams with negative goal differentials to reach the playoffs, let alone face off in Round 1.

However, this series could be a high-scoring affair, as Anaheim ranks 12th in the league for goals scored, and both teams are in the top six for goals against.

Looking ahead, the Atlantic Division is poised for intense competition this week, with crucial games on the calendar. The Sabres are currently performing well, boasting a 9-1-0 record over their last 10 games and only eight regulation losses since December. Meanwhile, the Lightning hold second place with a 5-5-0 record in recent games, while the Canadiens are clinging to third, tied in points with the Bruins, who currently occupy the first wild-card spot, just two points ahead of the Red Wings.

This week, the Sabres will face both the Bruins and Red Wings. Detroit is also set to compete against the Senators and Flyers, who are vying for a wild-card position. The Canadiens will challenge multiple Metropolitan Division playoff teams, including two matches against the Hurricanes and one against the Predators.

Congratulations are in order for Nikita Kucherov, who has taken the lead in the NHL scoring race, surpassing Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. Kucherov reached 112 points, temporarily pushing MacKinnon to third place, marking the first time since November 7 that MacKinnon was not in a top-two points position this season. On Saturday, Kucherov's four-point performance elevated him to the top of the leaderboard.

Despite Kucherov's rise, McDavid remains in the lead for the Hart Trophy, with a tight race ongoing. Currently, McDavid has 116 points, having scored six points in his last five games, while his Oilers sit in second place in the Pacific Division. Kucherov's recent performance has brought his total to 119 points after an impressive week.

Meanwhile, the assistant equipment manager for the Sabres, George Babcock, celebrated a significant milestone with his 2,500th NHL game. It’s heartening to see teams recognize the hard work of these individuals behind the scenes. In a fun moment, Bowen Byram acknowledged Babcock's milestone with a celebratory gesture.

In an amusing twist, the Calgary Flames have introduced a quirky new warm-up ritual that has caught attention. Calgary Sun and Herald reporter Danny Austin asked Blake Coleman about the routine, to which he humorously remarked, “We’re just dumb. We’ve got a few things going on.”

Lastly, congratulations to Hall High School’s varsity hockey team in West Hartford, Connecticut, for winning the DIII Connecticut state championship this week. The team triumphed over E.O. Smith with a score of 2-1 in overtime, with sophomore Matthew McDermott scoring the decisive goal. Senior goalie Matthew Bonner achieved program records for saves, wins, and minutes played, while forward Connor McHugh set new career marks for points, goals, and assists. This victory marks Hall High School's second state championship, the first being in 1993.
