UNC Searches for New Coach After Hubert Davis Departure

The University of North Carolina is on the lookout for a new head coach following Hubert Davis's exit. Several high-profile candidates are emerging as potential replacements.

Hubert Davis is no longer the head coach at the University of North Carolina, just five days after the Tar Heels' disappointing loss to VCU. Despite a solid 24-8 record and a signature win against Duke in February, Davis faced mounting pressure, especially after star forward Caleb Wilson suffered a season-ending injury. All indications suggested Davis would retain his position, but the team's second-round collapse, where they squandered a 19-point lead against VCU, ultimately sealed his fate.

Davis's tenure at UNC spanned five years, which included a national championship game appearance in 2022 and an ACC regular-season title in 2024. With his departure, the focus now shifts to who will take the reins in Chapel Hill.

Since Roy Williams retired in 2021, the head coaching position at UNC was seen as one of the most prestigious in college basketball. Despite recent challenges, sources within the industry still regard Carolina as a premier destination for coaching talent. "There’s plenty of money if they want," one source mentioned, highlighting the program's rich history, tradition, and facilities.

However, the new coach will face certain hurdles. Longtime athletic director Bubba Cunningham is set to leave this summer, with former NASCAR executive Steve Newmark taking over. Additionally, the department is facing decisions on whether to renovate the Dean Smith Center or relocate the basketball program. The football team is also gaining attention and resources, especially with Bill Belichick in town.

In the search for a new head coach, Carolina is expected to consider various candidates. Following Williams's retirement, the school promoted Davis from within after his nine-season tenure as an assistant. It seems unlikely that they will repeat that strategy this time by selecting another former Tar Heel.

Among the leading candidates is Billy Donovan, currently the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Although he has been away from college coaching since 2015, Donovan could be more open to a return now that the Bulls are unlikely to make the playoffs. He previously led Florida to two national championships and has extensive experience in the NBA.

Brad Stevens, the Boston Celtics president of operations, is also a potential target. Stevens has not coached since 2021 but has a successful history with Butler, where he reached back-to-back national championship games.

Additionally, top college coaches such as Tommy Lloyd from Arizona, Dusty May from Michigan, TJ Otzelberger from Iowa State, Todd Golden from Florida, and Nate Oats from Alabama may be on UNC’s radar. Texas Tech’s Grant McCasland and UConn’s Dan Hurley could also be considered.

Some of these coaching candidates have significant buyouts, including Lloyd's, which could be between $9 million and $12 million, and Golden's at $16 million. Oats's buyout will drop from $18 million to $10 million after April 1.

As for the roster, UNC boasts a top-10 recruiting class, featuring standout recruits Dylan Mingo and Maximo Adams. Mingo's commitment came after a competitive recruitment process against Baylor, and his brother is a promising player in the Big Ten. Adams, who emerged as a top prospect over the past year, had also drawn interest from other major programs before choosing Carolina.

Henri Veesaar, a second-team All-ACC selection, will be a key player for the new coach to retain. He excelled after transferring from Arizona, averaging 17.0 points and 8.7 rebounds. Jarin Stevenson and Derek Dixon are also important players to consider, with Stevenson stepping up following Wilson's injury.

Other potential returnees include Luka Bogavac, Jonathan Powell, and Jaydon Young, making the future of the program an important focus for whoever steps into the head coach role.
